Thank you for your support in 2021

Hey there Zero Wasters,

This is a final short newsletter to say a massive thank you for joining or continuing with us in 2021 on the journey to a zero waste Canberra. Reducing the waste of an entire city is no easy feat, so we are grateful to have your support, and hope that we have helped you on your personal zero waste journey too.

We were so looking forward to holding the 2021 Zero Waste Festival back in September, but appreciate your patience and support in having to postpone it due to COVID-19. We are still very hopeful that the Zero Waste Festival will go ahead on the new date of 30 April 2022 at Kambri, ANU.

As we near the end of another very challenging year, we wanted to highlight some hopeful things that happened this year, both locally and globally:

  • The ACT Government has begun the process of phasing out single use plastics, starting with single-use cutlery, stirrers and polystyrene food containers. Community consultation is now open for Phase 2 (that means you!). Get involved here.

  • More states and territories are introducing bans on single-use plastic, with ACT, QLD and SA leading the way, and NSW, VIC and WA with plans to scrap plastic in the next few years.

  • Over 300 million people worldwide took part in Plastic Free July in 2021.

  • NSW has composted thousands of tonnes of food waste instead of sending it to landfill thanks to FOGO schemes.

  • A FOGO pilot program has begun in several suburbs in Belconnen.

Action to stop the global waste crisis is gaining traction all around the world, with steps being made at the personal, community and local levels, which is putting pressure on governments and corporations to change the way they're doing things. We are so excited to be part of the wider zero waste movement, which not only seeks to reduce waste, but also creates so many opportunities for innovation, creativity and change.

10 Days of Zero Waste Christmas

In the 10 days leading up to Christmas, we've been sharing ideas to have a simpler, more affordable and lower waste Christmas. So far we've covered gifts, decorations, food and wrapping, and there are more great tips to come. Get our Christmas tips each day by following us on Instagram and Facebook.

Check out the post we shared on Day 2 about digital gift ideas:

Day 2 Digital Gifts

Day 2 of ✨10 Days of Zero Waste Christmas✨

Today's tip is: digital gifts! πŸ’»

While a digital or online gift may not be the first thing that comes to mind for Christmas, they're actually kind of perfect.

πŸ”Œ No physical gift means no waste
πŸ”Œ You can gift it anywhere in the world
πŸ”Œ You don't even have to get off the couch
πŸ”Œ You can get it at the absolute last minute

Our favourite digital gift ideas are:

🎁 A personalised video from a favourite sport star, singer or celebrity from a site like @memmo_au
🎁 A curated playlist just for them on the music streaming app they use (just like old school mixtapes)
🎁 A subscription to a streaming service, software or online magazine
🎁 Audio book credits
