Are you coming to the Zero Waste Festival?

Hey Zero Wasters,

We hope you had a lovely holiday period and were able to spend some relaxing time with friends and family. We're well into the swing of 2022 now, which means we're working hard on bringing you a fantastic Zero Waste Festival! Despite setbacks due to COVID, we're more committed than ever to make Canberra a zero waste city.

The festival is taking place on Saturday 30th April at Kambri, ANU. The purpose of the festival is to facilitate education and learning, bring the people together over the issue of waste, and inspire the community to make change.

The one-day festival will cover a wide range of topics from how to compost and recycle well at home, to zero waste businesses and community responses to waste. We'll be looking at the bigger picture of waste and how we can individually and collectively take action right now. There will also be fun ways to get involved, like activities for kids and a big clothes swap!

To let us know you're coming and get updates on the festival, register your interest on Eventbrite. We want to spread the word as far as possible. Can you help us by sharing our Facebook event?

More details coming soon.

February zero waste tip!

Now that kids are back at school, your attention might have turned back to lunchbox rubbish. One simple way to reduce the rubbish that ends up in the school bins is to make some DIY snacks.

We love finding new recipes online, but so often they've got someone's entire life story attached! That's why we love this recipe for no waste muesli bars by WasteLess Pantry. It's yummy, simple to follow, and you've probably got the ingredients in the cupboard already. Yum!

Congratulations Jess

Zero Waste Revolution committee member, Jess Fordyce, was named ACT Young Environmentalist of the Year late last year, and we are so proud of her! For the past year, Jess has worked with Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CRJO) to lead a food rescue/donation project in the council regions surrounding the ACT.

The project aims to prevent discarded food from supermarkets ending up in landfill, which results in wastage and the production of greenhouse gases. She instead helps to build successful ongoing relationships between supermarkets and charities to ensure this food is making it into the hands of those who need it most. She is now exploring the food waste space in the ACT, making connections with local supermarkets and organisations, and scoping out potential for a similar project here. She is also an active member of Trash Gather, a youth-led volunteer group that cleans up rubbish around Canberra.

Jess has been using her creativity and connections to help us organise the 2022 Zero Waste Festival, and we're so stoked to have her on the team. Read about Jess and other community groups rescuing food in this piece by the Canberra Weekly.
